Home- What is Epsom Salt?

Epsom salt is a naturally occurring substance that comes from a source known as Heptahydrate Epsomite, which is made up of Magnesium, Sulfur and Oxygen. Its chemical name is Magnesium Sulfate. It is called Epsom Salt because of its original production location in Epsom in Surrey, England where the salt was distilled from the springs that arise where the porous chalk of the North Downs meets non-porous London clay.

The two main uses of Epsom Salt are in Health and Gardening. Epsom salts are largely unknown to many people, and yet the benefits of using it are vast! The reason Epsom salts are so amazing is due to the abundance of the “miracle mineral” Magnesium which is a naturally occurring mineral found in many foods such as nuts and seeds, spinach and potatoes. Magnesium is responsible for over 300 biochemical reactions in the body but it is perhaps best known for its muscle relaxing properties, detoxification and also the formation of healthy bones and teeth.

Epsom Salts are great for gardening because magnesium creates an environment conducive to growth by improving phosphorus and nitrogen uptake, helping seeds to germinate and increase chlorophyll production. Studies have shown that magnesium and sulfur may help plants grow greener with higher yields and more blooms.

The two main methods of using Epsom Salt for health benefits are; Epsom Salt Baths and as an oral supplement (either as a laxative for relieving constipation or as part of a Cleanse such as a Liver and Gallbladder Flush). However they can also be used on the skin in the form of a face mask. All of these applications are covered in articles in this site.

In today’s modern environment, much of the magnesium we need is depleted within us and within our food, especially with so much attention being put on calcium supplementation as calcium is an antagonist mineral to magnesium. This means that too much calcium will displace the levels of magnesium in our bodies. This also means that there are also a lot of people suffering from muscle problems such as restless leg syndrome at night or constipation, the former being a lack of magnesium and the latter being too much calcium.

Perhaps the most common application for Epsom Salt is an Epsom Salts Bath. It is a great way to relax and sooth aching muscles after a long hard day at work and it will really help you sleep better too. This is perhaps one reason why it is a staple in many bathrooms all over the world! For more information about Epsom Salts Baths, visit the Epsom Salts Bath article.

Epsom salt can be obtained at most health or drug stores and even some supermarkets. It can also be easily bought in large quantities over the internet. It is inexpensive and can often be bought in bulk costing around $20 for 20 Lb.
